In glazes a finer grain (325 mesh) is used to encourage a better melt, where as clay bodies use a courser grain (200 mesh). The basic differences between silica, silicates and silica sands are the amounts of silicon dioxide they contain, the types of contaminants found in them and how they are bonded together. These differences give us a phenomenally wide range of materials to use in ceramics.
