Every potter has a list of WHAT they want to make.  HOW to make it is often the question.  During this demo-workshop, some 50+ making techniques will be demonstrated in answer to these how-to questions.  Short cuts, tips and tool-use at the wheel will be shared in demo after demo.  The hand-building of functional forms will also be covered in depth.

Techniques demonstrated include: hand positions for throwing, tools and their use, spout, rim and lip proportions, lids, trimming and foot finish, faceting and fluting, handles and lugs, bottle forms, dinnerware, square and oval baking ware, slip decoration, and more!

A professional potter for more than 50 years, Bill van Gilder began his clay work at age 15, as a studio apprentice to Byron Temple. He apprenticed in Ireland and England, and received a degree from Harrow School of Art, London, U.K.. He established and managed two large training pottery centers in Southern Africa (Lesotho & Swaziland), returning to the U.S. in 1985 and establishing a studio and gallery in Maryland which he continues to operate .  His work is exhibited worldwide and has been featured in Clay Times, Ceramics Monthly, Ceramic Review (UK), Ceramic Arts (China), and books including 500 Teapots and High Fire  Glazes.

This is a demonstration workshop so no materials or tools are required.  Refreshments and beverages will be provided, and a slide show and talk are included Friday evening.  We’re excited to offer this challenging and enriching class experience.
